I recall hearing once that those who control the stories control reality. Charles Eisenstein points out that our current world-view is built on the \u201cStory of Separation\u201d. This story is pretty much the version of reality presented by late 19th Century mainstream thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cYou are a separate individual among other separate individuals in a universe that is separate from you as well\u201d;<\/li><li>\u201cThere is no purpose, only cause. The universe is at bottom blind and dead\u201d;<\/li><li>human beings must \u201cprotect ourselves against this hostile universe of competing individuals and impersonal forces, we must exercise as much control as possible\u201d (Eisenstein 2013).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This old story is looking shaky these days, but is still widely believed. It\u2019s familiar after all, and opening our minds to something radically different feels very uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we need, Eisenstein suggests, is \u201cthe Story of Interbeing\u201d, a new story that understands that \u201cour very existence is relational.\u201d We\u2019re not ready for that new story but for many of us the old story no longer rings true, so \u201cwe still must traverse, naked, the space between stories\u201d (Eisenstein 2013).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"584\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adrianharris.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Hembury_tree.jpg?resize=584%2C391&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Back lit tree\n\" class=\"wp-image-167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adrianharris.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Hembury_tree.jpg?w=650&amp;ssl=1 650w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adrianharris.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Hembury_tree.jpg?resize=300%2C201&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/adrianharris.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Hembury_tree.jpg?resize=448%2C300&amp;ssl=1 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><figcaption>Hembury Fort, Devon. \u00a9 Author.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As activists we sometimes find ourselves using the Story of Separation to make sense of our world. This can be misleading, as we get caught up in a model of reality that\u2019s the fundamental root of the problem. Eisenstein believes that we \u201cneed to ground environmentalism on something other than data\u201d and he draws on Deep Ecology to explore an alternative:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWhen we as a society learn to see the planet and everything on it as beings deserving of respect \u2013 in their own right and not just for their use to us \u2013 then we won\u2019t need to appeal to climate change to do all the best things that the climate change warriors would have us do\u201d (Eisenstein, 2015).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The work of Charles Eisenstein, <a href=\"https:\/\/adrianharris.org\/blog\/2020\/04\/08\/david-abram\/\">David Abram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/adrianharris.org\/blog\/2020\/04\/15\/glen-mazis\/\">Glen Mazis<\/a> and myself is rooted in single insight: We are relational earthbodies, fundamentally intertwined with the more-then-human-world.
